| Name | Amino Acids |
| Uses | A blend of essential and non-essential amino acids used to support muscle recovery, energy production, cellular repair, and metabolic health. Commonly used in wellness IV protocols for post-workout recovery, performance enhancement, and general nutritional support. |
| Route Of Administration | Intravenous (IV) |
| Frequency Of Use | Typically administered once weekly for general nutritional support. In performance or recovery programs, may be given up to twice weekly for 4 to 6 weeks, followed by reassessment. Long-term use should be reviewed every 8 to 12 weeks. |
| Concentration(s) | Varies based on formulation. Common concentrations range from 2.5% to 10% amino acid solutions. |
| Maximum Dosage (Day, Wk) (g/mL)/mL | Maximum dose per infusion: 500 mL of a 5% solution (25 g of amino acids). Maximum weekly dose: 1,000 mL (50 g of amino acids). Higher doses may increase risk of nitrogen overload in wellness patients. |
| Contraindications | Severe renal impairment or dialysis dependency (risk of nitrogenous waste accumulation). Severe hepatic impairment. Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism (e.g., phenylketonuria). Known hypersensitivity to any amino acids in the formulation. Pregnancy and breastfeeding unless cleared by OB provider. |
| Possible Side Effects | Nausea, headache, flushing, or dizziness during infusion. Mild injection site irritation. Rare: allergic reactions (rash, itching, hypersensitivity). Electrolyte imbalances if infused too rapidly or in high doses. |
| Compatibility With Other Drugs | Generally compatible with normal saline and D5W. May be combined with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in comprehensive wellness IV formulations, but compatibility should always be verified when mixing multiple components. |
| Allergies | Allergy to individual amino acids is rare, but reactions can occur with preservatives or stabilizers in compounded formulations. |
| Administration Time | Typical infusion time: 60 to 90 minutes for standard doses. Slower infusion may improve tolerability in sensitive patients. |
| IV Dosing | For general wellness and nutritional support: 250 mL to 500 mL IV once weekly. For athletic recovery or performance enhancement: 500 mL IV once or twice weekly for 4 to 6 weeks, followed by reassessment. |
| IM/Push | Not recommended for IM or IV push administration due to osmolarity and volume. Controlled IV infusion is preferred for safety and comfort. |
| What To Do If Adverse Reaction Occurs | 1. Stop the infusion immediately. 2. Assess vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation). 3. If nausea, flushing, or dizziness occurs, place the patient in a comfortable position and provide oral fluids if tolerated. 4. For allergic reactions (rash, itching, shortness of breath), administer antihistamines and consider epinephrine if severe. 5. If symptoms persist or worsen, arrange for emergency transfer to a higher level of care (call 911 if necessary). |
